Free Fonts That Look Like Futura
Want Futura's clean geometric style without the license fee? These free Google Fonts come closest, from Jost to League Spartan.
Futura is one of the most famous typefaces ever made. It’s on film posters, sneaker ads and luxury packaging, and it even went to the Moon on the plaque Apollo 11 left behind in 1969. It’s also a paid font. The good news: several free fonts capture its clean, geometric style remarkably well.
A quick history of Futura
Futura was designed by Paul Renner and released by the Bauer Type Foundry in Germany in 1927. Renner built it from simple geometric shapes, near-perfect circles, triangles and squares, in the same spirit as the Bauhaus design school of the time (Wikipedia).
Nearly a century later it still looks modern. Wes Anderson and Stanley Kubrick used it in their films, artist Barbara Kruger built her style around Futura Bold Oblique, and Nike’s “Just Do It” ads made its bold condensed weights famous (more on that here).
How to recognize Futura
- A perfectly round O. Round letters are close to true circles.
- Pointed capitals. The A, M and N come to sharp points.
- A single-storey a. The lowercase a is just a circle and a stem.
- A small x-height. Lowercase letters are short, and the tall letters (b, d, h, l) rise above the capitals.
- Even strokes. Lines keep almost the same thickness everywhere.
These terms are explained in plain English in our font anatomy guide.
The 4 best free alternatives to Futura
1. Jost
The closest free match. Jost is inspired by the German geometric sans-serifs of the 1920s, Futura’s own era (Google Fonts). It has the round forms, the single-storey a and a full range of weights from Thin to Black, each with a true italic.
Best for: anything that needs to feel like classic Futura, from logos to body text.
2. League Spartan
A bold, confident geometric sans-serif from The League of Moveable Type. It’s based on Spartan, a typeface Linotype released in 1939 to compete directly with Futura (Wikipedia). It shines in its heavy weights.
Best for: punchy headlines, posters and sports-style graphics.
3. Josefin Sans
An elegant geometric sans-serif with a vintage, 1920s feel. It’s lighter and more decorative than Futura, which makes it lovely for stylish headings.
Best for: weddings, fashion, boutique brands and elegant titles.
4. Poppins
A geometric sans-serif that’s rounder and more modern than Futura, with taller lowercase letters. It looks less classic, but it’s easier to read at small sizes.
