What Font Does Spotify Use?

Spotify now uses Spotify Mix, a custom font by Dinamo that replaced Circular in 2024. Here's what changed, and the best free lookalikes.

Short answer: since May 2024, Spotify’s brand typeface has been Spotify Mix, a custom font designed with the Berlin type studio Dinamo. It replaced Spotify Circular, Spotify’s tailored version of the Circular typeface. Neither Spotify font can be downloaded, but there are good free lookalikes below.

The old font: Circular

Circular is a geometric sans-serif designed by Laurenz Brunner and sold by the Swiss foundry Lineto, where it’s known as LL Circular. It took years to develop and was completed in 2013. Its round, friendly shapes made it popular with tech brands: Airbnb used it for its branding (Wikipedia), and Spotify used its own version, Spotify Circular, across its app and marketing for years.

The new font: Spotify Mix

In May 2024 Spotify introduced Spotify Mix, created with Dinamo, the studio founded by Johannes Breyer and Fabian Harb (It’s Nice That).

Why Spotify changed. Rasmus Wängelin, Spotify’s global head of brand design, told It’s Nice That that Circular had served the brand well, “but it also felt quite limiting.” The team wanted a typeface with more personality and a more human feel, instead of something that looked too perfect.

What’s different about Spotify Mix:

  • Many widths and weights, from condensed to extended, so it can shout on a billboard or stay quiet in the app.
  • Four sets of numbers for different jobs.
  • A “transmitter” shape in the spaces inside letters such as p, b and d, a nod to sound and amplification.
  • Subtle flicks and diagonal cuts that give it character up close.
  • Designed to move, so it works well in animation.

Is the Spotify logo a font?

No. Like most brand logos, the Spotify logo, the green circle with three sound waves and the wordmark beside it, is artwork rather than typed text. That’s why font identifiers can only suggest similar fonts for it. We explain more in Why Logo Fonts Are So Hard to Identify.

Free fonts that look like Spotify’s

Spotify’s fonts are proprietary, but these free Google Fonts get you close:

  • For the Circular look: Figtree, DM Sans or Outfit. Friendly geometric sans-serifs with round shapes, clean at any size.
  • For Spotify Mix’s personality: Bricolage Grotesque. A free font with adjustable widths and quirky details, good for expressive headlines.

None is an exact copy, but each captures the mood for playlists, podcast covers and social posts.

Other brands with custom fonts

Spotify isn’t alone. Netflix created Netflix Sans in 2018 after licensing Gotham became expensive. Owning a font gives a brand a unique voice, and saves on license fees when text is seen by millions.
